World-first Plant for Nanocrystalline Cellulose (NCC)
January 26, 2012
CelluForce – a joint venture between Domtar Corporation and FPInnovations – has heralded industrial-scale production of NCC with the inauguration of a $36 million facility. The Windsor, Quebec, plant is the first of its kind in the world, and will ultimately be capable of producing 1,000 kg of NCC per day.
The facility, designed and engineered by NORAM, and incorporating some of NORAM’s own proprietary equipment, came together seamlessly on time and on budget, with excellent collaboration between all parties. The technical innovation embodied in the plant has been instrumental in propelling Canada to the forefront of NCC development.
A wide range of products incorporating NCC are currently being trialed throughout industry, and hold significant promise for further beneficiating Canada’s forest products. NORAM is represented at the board level at ArboraNano, the industry organization at the heart of promoting NCC development, and is actively engaged in a number of R&D projects.
