New Markets for Lignin

The lignin recovery plant introduced to the forest products industry as part of FPInnovations’ new Bio-economy Technology Centre in Thunder Bay, ON has attracted a great deal of interest.
The NORAM process is the subject of a recent article in Pulp & Paper Canada, that underlines the potential for lignin to be exploited as a chemical feedstock for the production of resins, carbon fibre, and thermoplastics.
Stakeholders in the lignin plant include NORAM, FPInnovations, the Ministry of Research and Innovation of Ontario, the Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-economy (CRIBE), and AbitibiBowater’s Thunder Bay mill.
