Lithium Production Drives to Zero Carbon
April 5, 2023
A rich geothermal brine reservoir in Europe is emerging not only with the potential to meet the foreseeable needs of Europe’s lithium market, but to provide some of the world’s lowest carbon intensity lithium in the process. NORAM subsidiary NESI (NORAM Electrolysis Systems) has engineered an electrochemical demonstration plant at the heart of the operation.
There are no free lunches, and the production of lithium from mining and salar deposits carries commensurate overhangs in energy, water and chemicals. Vulcan Energy Resources has a different approach. An existing geothermal facility in Germany will draw on naturally occurring, renewable geothermal energy to power the lithium extraction process from the associated brines and deliver by-product lithium to the Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) markets – all on a very small footprint.
NESI has designed and supplied the groundbreaking Vulcan project with a modular skid assembly, capable of running commercial-sized electrochemical cells, in a demonstration of the Vulcan process and the versatile NORSCAND® platform. The electrochemical process beneficiates chloride brines to high-purity Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate (LHM), suitable for the energy storage industry.
