A Converter Made to Fit
July 19, 2023
A Belgian acid plant has a new lease on life after a custom designed NORAM stainless-steel converter replaced one that had been in service for nearly half a century. The challenge: to accommodate an even larger converter within an already tightly constrained footprint.
NORAM’s stainless steel converters have been setting design standards for sulfuric acid plants for many years. The converter’s operational flexibility, and the performance capability to meet stringent new SO2 emission standards, checked the first two selection criteria. Locating the new 6.2m diameter converter and associated ducting within the given space limitations checked the third.
The 4-stage converter was fabricated off-site and barged by river to the plant in one piece, before being lifted into place with pinhole precision during a 42-day shutdown. Design, supply, demolition and installation was supplied through the offices of NORAM International AB (Sweden) on an EPC basis, with sub-contractor support from Belgium.
