LIGNOR™ - ARD - Treatment for Heavy Metals

The LIGNOR™-ARD process is an economically and environmentally sustainable solution for the treatment of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD).

LIGNOR™-ARD treats ARD to levels within the British Columbia Aquatic Life Standards and generates a biologically stable sludge, which strongly bonds the metals, preventing further leaching into the receiving environment. By greatly reducing the sludge volume compared to high density lime technology, LIGNOR™-ARD solves the issue of sludge removal. The low reagent costs also significantly lowers the operating expenses.

Environmental Sustainability
The LIGNOR™-ARD process is a “waste to treat a waste” technology adopting the Green Chemistry concept. Lignin is a waste by-product of the pulping process. Lignin derivatives, the active component of the process, are produced under the LIGSORB™ trade name.

Stable End Product
LIGSORB™ is produced under acidic or caustic conditions in temperatures of 135-185°C and pressures of 350-1400 kPa (3.5-14 atm). Presence of many strong C-C bonds within LIGSORB™ makes it resistant to degradation even under harsh chemical conditions, securing the metal-lignin complexes. The resultant stable and easily dewatered sludge is less voluminous than the present “best available technology” and has a potential to recover and recycle the metals.

Successful Removal of all Metals
In laboratory tests on ARD water, LIGSORB™ has proven to bind to and remove metals including aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, iron and zinc.
