Sulphuric Acid Plants for Ambatovy Nickel Project

Client: Bateman Tenova
Location: Tamatave, Madagascar
Completed: Between Aug 2007 - February 2011

Highlights: Two sulphur-burning acid plants, each with a name-plate capacity of 2,750 MTPD. The plants became benchmarks for project design and execution in a constrained resource environment, and featured off-site fabrication of most of the equipment, including the 25m x 14.5 m dia. converters with internal heat exchangers. Ambatovy embodies acid plants designed, for the first time, around the many innovations and improved unit processes that NORAM has brought to acid equipment design. The plants show-case advanced features such as the split-flow radial gas exchangers, low-pressure-drop tower packing, and converter design, that have become hallmarks of NORAM technology.

Scope of work: Engineering design employing 'design-for-fabrication' and 'design-for-maintenance' techniques (including process, mechanical, instrumentation, control system), proprietary equipment, ducting and piping design, training, and commissioning and start-up assistance.
